FriendshipWorks Launches New Ride & Thrive: Healthcare and Transportation Guide

Boston, MA— FriendshipWorks, a Boston-based nonprofit dedicated to ending elder isolation through connection, compassion, and community, is proud to announce the launch of its new Ride & Thrive: Healthcare, Transportation, and Medical Escort Guide (The Guide), designed to help older adults and caregivers navigate the often-complex landscape of local transportation and healthcare options.

The Guide, now available online in English and Spanish, provides up-to-date, practical information about transportation resources, non-emergency medical transportation, accessibility options, and community programs that help older adults get to medical appointments and stay connected to essential care.

“Transportation is one of the most significant barriers to healthcare and social connection for older adults,” said Kyle Robidoux, Executive Director of FriendshipWorks. “This guide empowers older adults and their caregivers with the knowledge and resources they need to stay healthy, engaged, and independent.”

The new Guide includes:

  • Comprehensive listings of local and regional transportation providers in Greater Boston
  • Tips for preparing for medical appointments and coordinating rides
  • Information on cost, accessibility, and eligibility for programs

The resource builds on FriendshipWorks’ mission of creating connections to reduce social isolation by addressing one of the root causes of isolation—lack of accessible transportation. Through this initiative, FriendshipWorks aims to make it easier for older adults to maintain their health, independence, and social connections.

“We know that something as simple as a ride can make the difference between isolation and inclusion,” said Emily Shea, Age Strong Commissioner at the City of Boston. “This guide helps ensure that no older adult misses a medical appointment—or a meaningful moment in their community—because they can’t find a ride.”

The comprehensive guide complements FriendshipWorks’ Medical Escort program, which connects older adults with a volunteer to accompany them to local medical appointments.

The Guide was made possible with funding from The Gould Charitable Foundation.
