Who We Are

Equity Statement

FriendshipWorks strives to reflect our values of Connectedness, Joy & Comfort, Mutuality, Curiosity, Trust, Empathy, and Collaboration.

Community is a tapestry of diverse people from all walks of life. Every member of our community of older adults, volunteers, and staff has a role in ensuring that everyone feels respected and welcome.

We foster connections with a commitment to creating a safe place for all people regardless of age, race, religion, ability/disability, economic class, sexual orientation, or gender expression.

FriendshipWorks is committed to the elimination of racial prejudice and discrimination within our organization. Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is being integrated into all facets of FriendshipWorks’ operational practices, volunteer recruitment and management, board member recruitment, employee hiring and retainment, marketing and community outreach initiatives, and program delivery in every neighborhood we serve. As part of this effort, We contracted with YW (InclusionBoston) to provide consulting services and training regarding DEI through an 18-month engagement which began on July 12th, 2022.

We endeavor to apply a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens to a changing environment that is quickly reshaping the culture of work and volunteering, the experience of aging, and the ways in which we engage in our communities. Our strategic plan includes continuing to diversify our staff, board, funding pipeline, and volunteer recruitment, as well as building connections and capacity to reach more older adults of color, as well as Spanish-speaking and LGBTQ+ older adults -- all with attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

FriendshipWorks is committed to increasing diversity and creating a culture where all people are welcomed, respected, and included, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, language, religion, gender identity or expression, ability, or economic status. In addition to supporting older adults who are non-English speaking, we strive to ensure that our programs are accessible to individuals with hearing loss or low vision, and to provide appropriate support for older adults with mobility challenges or mild cognitive decline.
