When older adults experience one-on-one connection it’s powerful. The assistance from a volunteer reassures them that someone they know and trust will be there. It helps elders to live independently or have greater access to essential health care. Bonnie told us she hadn’t been to a doctor since last spring, due to a medical condition that made her afraid of falling. “I was so impressed with my Medical Escort Lia. Her goodness and sweetness made me feel calm.”

And the feeling is mutual. While volunteers think they are coming to help others, these special relationships often enrich their own lives. Friendly Visiting volunteer Sarah Klein says she learns from her friend Carolyn’s wisdom and life experiences, “Carolyn has gone through so many situations in her life that I haven’t lived yet.”  Volunteering is also a great way to get to know a new area of the city, give back to your community, or help prepare you for a career in healthcare or human services.

Whatever your reason is, we’d love to hear from you. Submit the form above and a member of our staff will be in touch.
